Easy Tamil For Foreign Travelers

Tamil Nadu stands as No 1 in the number of foreign tourists visiting India. While most of the Tamils do understand little English, travelling around Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry would definitely be easy,if tourists can speak in simple conversational Tamil.
Here is my little help for the tourists in this regard.
The right way to greet in Tamil !Make the locals your relatives!
In the west ,its common to greet by a 'Hello!'This way of greeting has no 'relationship' indicated. In Tamil, greetings are always relationship based.Yes,you are somebody to them!Like, may be a Brother,Sister,Dad,Mom etc.So when you meet some one for some talk ,you can say, depending on their age and gender,as follows:
(All words start with 'A' sound, generally)
Elderly Man-"Ayya"
Elderly Lady-"Amma"(Motherly)
Man(if elder to you)-"Anna"(Elder Brother)
Woman(-do-)-"Akka"(Elder Sister)
Man(if younger)-"Thambi"(Younger Brother)
Any 'woman' irrespective of age ,can be addressed as 'Amma' For example ,you can call a little girl as 'Amma'
And ,how do you say "Good Morning" etc.in Tamil ?
Let us understand that in Tamil culture, such greetings ARE NOT THERE.However, due to western influence, such greetings are not unacceptable. But to greet any one,the right way,at any point of time, one word in Tamil ,will suffice.
That is 'Vanakkam' with folded hands as under.

The fore-going 2 components make a complete greeting in Tamil. For instance, you want to ask how far is Anna Nagar to a cab driver.Your greeting would be"Vanakkam,Anna!...."followed by your question.
And,don't forget to add suffix 'INGA' !
In English, the word 'you' can be used to address any one,in the normal conversations. The word 'you' does not have any 'respect for age factor' built into it.'You' is used for a little boy and a ripe old man as well. But Tamils are keen on giving respect for age.
So 'you' in Tamil is:
You-Nee (For little ones)
You-Neenga(For all,with respect)
So I suggest using "Neenga" for everyone, when you want to use address them. Please note that if you use "Nee" without the suffix "inga" the usage may be interpreted as a rude gesture and may provoke anger in the person addressed .
Once I was staying in a hotel in Ernakulam ,Kerala. The room keeper used this word "Nee" to address me.I got really angry until I realised that "Nee" is used in Malayalam normally for all age groups .
Now to the basics of Tamil manners for interactions.
When you want to talk to someone ,it is advisable for you to go to him than calling him to you.Often if you call someone to you it may be interpreted as a rude gesture. However, calling little children is considered okay.
Hand shake is not normal in Tamil culture but if you offer, they may accept it without offence.A smile and a 'Vanakkam' is normal.
"Thayavu seithu" means"Please' Please note that the usage of 'Please' in Tamil culture is not as frequent as in English. So,even if you forget to use this word,it is okay.
'Nanri' is 'Thanks' in Tamil.
"Bye" in Tamil,is 'Poyittu varen"
Basic words for conversation.
Come-Vaanga
Go-Poanga
Sit-ukkarunga
Eat-Saapidunga
Give-Kodunga
Take-Edunga
Wait-Konjam irunga
Catch-Pidiyunga(Say,you want to shout "Catch that thief"-Just shout'Pidiyunga')
Please note 'inga' at the end of any instruction .
Now to Questions!
(Questions normally start with 'yeah' sound)
Why-yean? or yetharkku?
Where-enga?
Which-edhu?
How-eppadi?
How much-evvalavu?
(Eg:How much is the price?-Evvalavu vilai?
How far is the beach?-kadarkarai evvalavu thooram?)
Note:Please note that in Tamil usage, sentences do not start with verbs.Eg:'Please Clean my room' in Tamil will be "En arayai sutha paduthu".Note that the word 'room(arai)' comes in the beginning and the verb 'clean' at the end.
Simple Conversational sentences:
What is your name?-Unga peyar enna?
I am Victor-En peyar Victor
Where is the toilet?-kaliparai engu irrukiradhu?
(If you say toilet engu irrukiradhu ? also most people are likely to understand especially in cities)
How can I go to Adayar?-Adayar eppadi poagalaam?
I need a cab-Ennakku oru taxi veandum.
What's the fare?-Evvalavu aagum?
Eg:You want to go to Pondicherry by a cab from Chennai ,you can ask the cab driver "Ponidcherry evvalavu aagum?"
Welcome-Vaanga !
How do you do?-Eppadi irukkinga?
Yes-Sari
No-Illai
Water-Thanneer

Food-Sappadu

  1. ஐயா, அருமையாகவிளக்கியுள்ளீர்கள்! அருமை!

    மொழிபெயர்ப்பென்பது ஒரு மொழியில் சொல்லப்பட்ட கருத்தானது எந்தவகையிலும் சிதையாமல் இன்னொருமொழிக்கு மாற்றுவதாகும். இது உலகிலுள்ள பிறமொழிகளுள் ஒன்றிலிருந்து மற்றொன்றுக்கு எளிதாகச்செய்யமுடிவதாயிருக்கலாம். ஆனால் தமிழைபொருத்தவரை அது எளிதானதாக இருக்கமுடியாது.

    தமிழில் தாங்கள் இங்கே சுட்டிக்காட்டியிருக்கும் இவைபோன்றவைமட்டுமல்லாமல் இன்னும்பலவுமுள்ளன. என்னவென்றால், தமிழில் 'தொடர்மொழிகள்' உண்டு. அந்த தொடர்மொழிகள் அவற்றிலுள்ள தனிச்சொற்களது பொருள்களின் கூட்டன்று அவைதரும் பொருள் முற்றிலும் வேறானதாயிருக்கும்!

    இதைப்பாருங்கள்:

    // புணர்ச்சியும் பொருள்மாற்றமும்:

    (புணர்ச்சி - சொற்களை ஒன்றாகச்சேர்த்து பேசுதலும் எழுதுதலும்)

    புணர்ச்சியால்விளையும் பொருள்மாற்றங்களை இங்கே பாருங்கள். சொற்களிலும் அவற்றின் வரிசையமைப்பிலும் எந்தமாற்றமுமில்லாமல், பொருளை வெவ்வேறாக மாறுபடுத்திக்காட்டுவதில் புணர்ச்சியின் பங்கு என்னவென்பதை எண்ணிப்பார்த்தால் எவருக்கும் வியப்பாயிருக்கும்!

    வேறெந்தமொழியிலாவது இப்படி செய்யமுடியுமாவென்பதை எண்ணிப்பாருங்கள்!

    'நான் மாங்காயை பறித்து தின்னவில்லை'

    - பறித்தேன், ஆனால் தின்னவில்லை.

    'நான் மாங்காயை பறித்துத்தின்னவில்லை'

    - தின்றேன், ஆனால் பறிக்கவில்லை!

    'நான் மாங்காயைப்பறித்து தின்னவில்லை'

    (பத்திரமாக பையில் வைத்துக்கொண்டேன்.) -ஆனால் கொய்யாக்காயைப்பறித்து தின்றேன்.

    'நான் மாங்காயைப்பறித்துத்தின்னவில்லை'

    -நான் பறித்ததும் தின்றதும் மாங்காயேயில்லை!
    (அது கொய்யாக்காய்)

    ஒன்றை சொல்லும்போது, அதிலுள்ள புணர்ச்சியால்வெளிப்படுகின்ற பொருளானது, சொல்லாதவொருபொருளையும் வெளிப்படுத்துவது தமிழுக்குள்ள சிறப்பு.

    இதையும்பாருங்கள்:

    கல்கியின் பொன்னியின்செல்வனில், ஆதித்தகரிகாலன் கொல்லப்படுகிறான். கொலைப்பழியானது வந்தியத்தேவன்மீதுவிழுகிறது. அப்போது வந்தியத்தேவன்சொல்வதாக,

    'நான் ஆதித்த கரிகாலனைக் கொல்லவில்லை'

    என்றிருக்கிறது.

    இதற்கு பொருளென்னவென்றுபார்ப்போம். இது இருக்கின்றபடியே புணர்த்தினால்,

    'நான் ஆதித்தகரிகாலனைக்கொல்லவில்லை'
    என்றாகும்.

    இப்படிச்சொன்னால், 'ஆதித்தகரிகாலனைக்கொல்லவில்லையென்றால் வேறுயாரைக்கொன்றாய்?'
    என்று ஒரு வினாவரும்.

    சரி புணர்த்தாமல் பிரித்தெழுதுவோமென்று,

    'நான் ஆதித்தகரிகாலனை கொல்லவில்லை'
    என்றெழுதினாலோ,

    'கொல்லவில்லையென்றால் அவனை வேறு என்னதான்செய்தாய்?' என்றவினாவரும்!

    அப்படியானால் எப்படித்தானெழுதுவதென்கிறீர்களா? இப்படியெழுதிப்பாருங்கள்!

    'ஆதித்தகரிகாலனை நான்கொல்லவில்லை'

    (அப்படியானால் வேறுயாரோதான்கொன்றிரு

    இதில் புணர்ச்சிதருகின்ற பொருளுக்கேற்றவாறு வினாவும் மாறுவதைப்பாருங்கள்.

    'நான்கொல்லவில்லை' என்பது புணர்ச்சியிலக்கணத்தில் 'எழுவாய்த்தொடர்' எனப்படுகிறது.

    தொடர்மொழியென்றுகாட்டப்படுகின்ற இருபத்தாறில்,முதலிலிருப்பது இந்த எழுவாய்த்தொடர்தான். ஆனால் இந்த தொடரானது இன்று தமிழிலிருக்கின்ற எந்தவொரு நூலிலாவது இருக்கிறதா, யாராவது எழுதியிருக்கிறார்களாவென்றால் இல்லையென்றேசொல்லவேண்டும்!

    இந்த புணர்ச்சியென்னும் இலக்கணமானது இன்று தமிழறிஞர்களாலுங்கூட பின்பற்றப்படுவதில்லையென்பது வருந்தத்தக்கவொருசெய்தியாகும். புணர்ச்சி பிழைபட்டால், பொருளும் பிழைபடுமென்பது இப்போது உங்களுக்கு புரிந்திருக்குமெனநினைக்கிறேன்.

    பொன்னியின்செல்வனில் தேவையின்றிப்புணர்த்தப்பட்டிருக்குமிடங்கள்மட்டும் ஐயாயிரத்துக்குமேல்! தேவையிருந்தும் புணர்த்தாதவிடங்களோ ஐம்பதாயிரமுமிருக்கும், அறுபதாயிரமுமிருக்கும்!

    பிழைபடப்புணர்த்தி பொருளற்றதாக்காமல், பிழையின்றிப்புணர்த்தி தமிழை சிறப்புறவைப்போம்! //

    இதில் புணர்ச்சியால்விளையும் தொடர்மொழிகளும் அவற்றால் உண்டாகும் பொருளும் விளக்கப்பட்டுள்ளபடி இவற்றை வேற்றுமொழியில் மொழிபெயர்ப்பதென்றால் தமிழை நன்றாக அறிந்தவொருவரால்மட்டுமேமுடியும். அவ்வாறன்றி ஒரு பொறிகொண்டுசெய்வதானால் அந்த பொறிக்கு தொடர்மொழிகளைப்பற்றிய அறிவை ஊட்டாமல் அது இயலாது.

    அதை செய்வதென்றால் இலக்கணத்தையேவூட்டவேண்டியிருக்கும். அந்த முயற்சியில் அமெரிக்காவிலிருக்கும் நண்பர் திரு. வேல்முருகன் சுப்பிரமணியனவர்கள் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கிறார். அவரது முயற்சி வெற்றிபெறும் காலம் வருமென்று நம்புகிறேன்.
